Glendalough

So much has been written about Glendalough there is little I can add. Situated in a majestic glaciated valley in Wicklow 45 minutes from Dublin it is one of the most visited heritage sites in all of Ireland. If anything, on a sunny weekend, the site can get crowded with significant traffic issues as people look to get into one of the two main car parks.

Ironically, this is where St. Kevin came to find solitude and solace in the 6th century as he wished to dedicate himself to his Christian faith. You can still experience the quietness and serenity of the place if you visit early in the day or after hours when most of the tourists have left.

What St. Kevin and his followers built was one of the most important religious and ecclesiastical sites in all of Europe and the excellent interpretative centre and guides provide great information - well worth visiting the centre and talking to the guides before visiting the Monastic City. Equally impressive are the two glacial lakes plus there are many walks in the area including a spectacular walk to the highest point in the valley, the Spinc, where there are tremendous views back down the valley and across to the Miner’s Village.
