Cahir Castle

It is easy to bypass Cahir in Co. Tipperary and it’s castle as you zoom along on the M8 motorway to or from further south - possibly heading towards the more famous Rock of Cashel. For once, I veered off at the Cahir junction to have a stop here. I knew little about the castle and was really surprised (in a good way) with it’s size, history, presentation and preservation. The castle is in the middle of the town, sitting appropriately on a rocky island on the River Suir. It dates back to the 13th century, though there are indications of earlier settlements in this most strategic location. It is considered the best preserved Norman castle in the country.

Bastion of the Butler family, elements of it remain in excellent condition, so much so that it has been used as a film location on many occasions. It has been excellently restored by the OPW with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. For a small entrance fee you can guide yourself around, but if at all possible get on one of the OPW guided tours. They last about 30 minutes but the excellent guides really bring this castle alive.
